Our leadership team is responsible for leading the daily operations of Irving Oil. Meet the team members who help guide our company:
Ian Whitcomb is the President of Irving Oil. In addition to day-to-day company management and the relationship with our Board of Directors, Mr. Whitcomb is responsible for guiding our strategy and keeping our company focused on its goals.
He brings a deep understanding of our company through more than 30 years of working with Irving Oil in his role with Deloitte. Mr. Whitcomb has held a variety of leadership roles, including sitting on the board of Deloitte Canada. Mr. Whitcomb is a graduate of Dalhousie University and became a Chartered Accountant in 1982. He is deeply committed to the success of our company.
Sarah Irving is the Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer with Irving Oil. Sarah grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick where she graduated from Rothesay Netherwood School and went on to complete her BA (cum laude) at Dartmouth College in 2010 and her MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2014. After completing her undergraduate degree, Sarah worked for Deloitte in their New York strategic consulting practice.
Sarah grew up in the family business where she is mentored by her Father, Arthur Irving. Together they share a strong appreciation for their employees and their customers and are committed to the growth and success of the company.
Mark Sherman is Irving Oil’s Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Sherman is a proven leader and has been an integral part of Irving Oil’s leadership team as General Manager of Refining and Supply.
Mr. Sherman joined the company in 2008, after a 25-year career in Fort McMurray working in oil sands production. Mr. Sherman achieved a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Allison University.
Jennifer is responsible for leading the Corporate Governance and Advisory Services team across Irving Oil, focused on our Company’s engagement with its Board of Directors, coordination of cross-functional business planning and execution and other advisory services.
Prior to this role, Jennifer was a Partner at Deloitte where she provided her clients including Irving Oil a wide-range of Advisory services drawing on her diverse experience in the areas of Enterprise Risk and Consulting. Jennifer obtained her Certified Management Accountant designation in 2000 and has served on CMA New Brunswick’s Practical Experience Evaluation and Review Committee and the Public Accounting Committee. She currently serves as the Secretary of Kennebecasis Valley Minor Baseball Association.
Jennifer has 2 children and can often be found at any one of the local baseball fields, hockey arenas or gymnastic facilities.
Dale Cooper is Irving’s General Manager for Refining and Feedstocks, responsible for safety, crude supply, operations, maintenance, and construction activities at the Saint John Refinery, Canaport and East Saint John Terminals.
Prior to joining the company in 1998, Dale worked for Imperial Oil in Nova Scotia and Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia. He has held a number of leadership roles throughout his career of 30 years. Dale holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, both from the University of New Brunswick.
Kevin is Vice-Chair of the Chartered Professional Accountants of New Brunswick and a Board Member of the Atlantica Centre for Energy. He is also a Board Member and Treasurer of Special Olympics New Brunswick.
Kevin and his wife Valerie have three children and two granddaughters.
Darren is responsible for the company’s Sales & Marketing Operations. In his current role, Darren leads Retail Sales as well as Commercial and Home Heat businesses, Wholesale & Specialty Sales, Trucking and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Darren also has responsibility for Property Management associated with our retail sites.
Prior to this role, Darren served as General Manager of Irving Energy, leading our residential and commercial business for heating oil, diesel, propane and natural gas marketing.
Darren’s career with Irving Oil spans more than 28 years and includes a number of leadership roles including Regional Manager of Western Newfoundland and Labrador, General Manager of our Heating Division, and Manager of the Customer Contact Center. He has also held various project and strategy development roles in cost leadership, customer service and business transformation.
Darren has a Bachelor of Business from the University of Prince Edward Island with a major in Marketing.
Darren and his wife, Leeanne, have three children.
John Laidlaw is the Chief Legal Officer of Irving Oil.
Prior to joining Irving Oil, he practiced law with the law firm of Cox & Palmer where he held a variety of leadership positions.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Allison University and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of New Brunswick.
John and his wife, Sharon, have 4 children.
Jeff is responsible for the execution of all new business development opportunities for Irving Oil.
In his 19 years with Irving Oil, Jeff has held a variety of roles in Financial Accounting, Risk Management, and Business Development. In his role with Business Development, Jeff was responsible for the construction of two power generation facilities and the LNG Project at Canaport; he also led efforts to move Mid-Continent Crude to the east coast.
Jeff Matthews graduated from Business Administration at the University of New Brunswick in 1990. Jeff received his Chartered Accounting Designation in 1994 while working with Deloitte & Touche.
Jeff is married and has two children.
Steven is responsible for leading the Products and Terminals teams for Irving Oil. In his current role, he leads Product Supply and Trading, European Gasoline Blending, Marine Terminals & Shipping and Rail Operations.
In his 34 years with Irving Oil, Steven has held a variety of roles in Credit, Insurance, Shipping, Business Development, and Supply & Trading.
He has a Bachelor of Administration degree from University of New Brunswick and received his Certified General Accountants designation in 1985.
Steven and his wife, Cathy, have 3 children.
Kevin is responsible for leading the Human Resources team across Irving Oil, focused on attracting, developing and retaining great people.
Prior to this role, Kevin had responsibility for Public Affairs and for leading Supply and Trading, which has commercial responsibility for our petroleum supply chain. He has also held various positions within the company in refining growth projects, production planning and process operations.
Kevin joined Irving Oil in 1992 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick.
He and his wife have four children who keep them active with speed skating, theatre and music. In the community, Kevin volunteers with youth sports and economic development.
