An unwavering commitment to safety

Health and Safety

Safety is fundamental to how we operate our business each and every day. Our unwavering commitment to safety has always been an important point of pride at Irving Oil – a non-negotiable for our people and for the communities we serve.

With our safety journey to zero, we are striving to eliminate severe incidents and injuries across our organization. We continue to focus on doing the right thing, the right way, every time.

Our targets:
To achieve top-quartile safety performance for each business line, as compared to others in their industry.

To strive for the following safety performance targets for Recordable Injury Frequency (RIF) and Process Safety Events (PSE):

°

Sales and Marketing: RIF below 1.0 and PSE below 0.13

° Refining and Supply: RIF below 0.50 and PSE below 0.3
To continuously improve our personal and process safety performance and to reduce risk through focused operational risk management and near-miss incident investigation.

We applied new measures to improve safety performance after experiencing slight increases in our company-wide recordable injuries (RIF) and lost-time injuries (LTIR) in 2022.

Hundreds of hours are spent each year on emergency response training at our facilities, including firefighting, rescue, medical response and incident management systems.

We’ve expanded the roll-out of the weCommit program across the company. The weCommit culture of “Do the right thing, the right way, every time” is supported by the encouragement of five behaviours.

  • Seek knowledge
  • Ask questions
  • Follow procedures
  • Be accountable
  • Back up team members

We've expanded our team and developed new external partnerships to improve our capabilities in incident response, threat intelligence and operational technology cyber security, and introduced mandatory Privacy Breach Awareness training.
