Ultra-Low Sulphur Fuels
Due to a significant upgrade project at our refinery in the early 2000s, we were able to produce and market cleaner, low sulphur fuels ahead of regulations.
A few years later, further improvements allowed us to lead the way with the production of ultra-low sulphur diesel and gasoline products. With an investment of over $150 million, our refinery began producing ultra-low sulphur diesel in 2006, which has a sulphur content of only 15 parts per million (ppm) or less. That's a 97 per cent reduction from today's industry standard of 500 ppm for on-road diesel. Shortly after, we began producing ultra low sulphur gasoline. We were one of the first suppliers of this cleaner fuel to the California market, one of the most environmentally stringent markets in the world.
By the end of 2010, we will be leading the pack with the production of PRO HEAT Ultra Low Sulphur Heating Oil. This improved product will be shipped directly from our refinery to our marine terminal in Revere, Massachusetts, as part of a pilot program for the 2010-2011 heating season. Based on the pilot’s results, we’ll be deciding on further expansion to our other marine terminals.
