Irving Race Team 3rd in Long John
Travis Benjamin and the Irving race team were at their home track at Unity Raceway for Long John Weekend, Oct. 9-10, 2009. Following a solid performance in practice, starting third and finishing second, momentum was strong going into the feature race.
For the first 20 laps of the feature, the car ran in the 4th position. "I wasn't sure if we had a very good car or not at the start of the race but then the car came to," Benjamin said.
On the next restart, Benjamin moved into second and on the following restart the team took the lead. With 20 laps to go contact with the second place car cut down the left rear tire and sent the Irving Ford Fusion to the pits for a new tire. Despite the setback the team came back in at 7th, and Benjamin made a charge over the final 15 laps to finish third.
