Public Information Session Scheduled for the Eider Rock Environmental Impact Assessment Report
SAINT JOHN, NB – The Province of New Brunswick announced its acceptance of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report for Project Eider Rock, the second refinery project for Saint John that had been proposed by Irving Oil. The EIA Report is now available for public review and comment, an essential step towards the Province of New Brunswick’s decision making as part of the EIA process.

Recently, Irving Oil, along with partner BP, announced that both companies would not be proceeding with the Project at this time due to challenging market and industry conditions. However, the investment decision also noted that the environmental assessment would continue in order to preserve future options should market conditions become favourable and to understand government and community expectations for a project of this magnitude.

The EIA Report was prepared by an independent environmental engineering firm, Jacques Whitford Stantec Limited (JWSL), to meet the requirements of the Final EIA Guidelines established by the Province for the EIA of the Project.  The EIA Report and associated technical studies conducted as background information to the EIA are available for download on the Irving Oil website at www.irvingoil/com/company/erock.asp and CD ROM versions of the documents are also available from Irving Oil upon request by calling 1-888-525-1777 or emailing eiderrock@irvingoil.com.

In addition to the formal public meeting that will be hosted by the Province of New Brunswick on the EIA Report later this fall, Irving Oil is committed to hosting its own public engagement events to provide the community with an opportunity to learn more about the EIA Report and its conclusions.  As such, the public is invited to attend an open house hosted by Jacques Whitford Stantec and Irving Oil to discuss the results of the EIA. The open house will be held at the following time and location:

Time: September 9, 2pm-9pm
Location: NBCC Saint John Campus (950 Grandview Avenue),

Representatives from Jacques Whitford Stantec will be present to provide an overview of the EIA and its results and to answer any questions from the public.

Later this fall, to provide further information to the public prior to the provincial government’s formal public meeting, a technical workshop will be held to discuss the environmental effects analyses and the EIA results in more detail.  Registration for the workshop will begin at the open house and further details will be provided on how to participate in the coming weeks.

“We remain committed to completing the environmental assessment, given the significant progress that has been made over the past two and half years,” said Kevin Scott, Commercial Director of Refining Growth for Irving Oil. “We’re also grateful for all of the hard work Jacques Whitford Stantec has done to complete these comprehensive studies and we look forward to working with the community to explain the report’s results and address further comments.”
