9th Annual Operation Clean-Up During Environment Week
Clean-up will focus on local neighbourhoods.

Saint John, NB - This week, over 500 Irving Oil Refinery employees will be sporting their blue coveralls, gloves, and work boots in neighbourhoods throughout Uptown and East Saint John, as part of the refinery’s 9th Annual Operation Clean-up.  On June 3rd between 9am and 12pm, employees will be on the look out for litter as part of a week-long celebration of Canadian Environment Week, May 31-June 6.

The employee volunteers will be conducting the clean-up on such streets as Champlain Heights, Loch Lomond Road, MacDonald Street, Grandview Avenue, Commerce, Consumers, Mark Drive, Hickey Road, Forest Hills, McAllister Drive, Lower Cove Loop, King Square, a section of the McKay Highway and the Little River Reservoir.

“We look forward to this event each year,” says Mark Sherman, General Manager at the Saint John Refinery. “We’re proud of the community in which we work and live, and this gives us an opportunity to show our pride and give back to the community.”

Operation Clean-Up began in 2001 following the completion of the Irving Oil Refinery Upgrade Project. Since that time, the event has evolved to include neighbouring areas of Saint John, involving hundreds of company volunteers each year.  This year, several Irving Oil employees working on the Long Wharf development project will also be participating in the clean-up on June 2nd from 9am to 10:30am, picking up litter along the waterfront near the Long Wharf site.

Other Environment Week activities will include planting flowers at Bayview Elementary School and Champlain Heights Elementary School on June 2nd and 4th and a community Household Hazardous Waste drop-off hosted at the refinery, Grandview Avenue entrance, on June 5th, between 4pm and 7pm and June 6th, between 9am and 2pm.
