Consumer fuel discount program back
Irving and Sobeys combine to offer customer savings
SAINT JOHN - A popular program that offered motorists an opportunity to save at the gas pumps is back.
Irving Oil and Sobeys have once again combined efforts to offer a discount on gasoline purchased at participating Irving gas stations across the province over the next 13 weeks.
How the program works is that shoppers buying groceries at any Sobeys store will receive a discount coupon good towards the purchase of Irving gasoline.
The shopper needs to purchase at least $50 of groceries to receive a coupon but can combine coupons if they wish for an even bigger savings at the pump, says an Irving Oil official.
With the purchase, customers automatically receive a paper coupon for per-litre savings on fuel, excluding purchases of lottery, tobacco, prescriptions, bottle deposits, fluid milk and taxes. The more they buy at Sobeys, the more they save.
Purchase $250 or more in groceries and save up to nine cents per litre at participating Irving locations.
The program was tried out in 2008 and proved popular with motorists.
"We're bringing the program back because our customers responded so strongly when we first launched it in 2008," said Harry Hadiaris, general manager of Irving Oil Marketing, G.P.
"It was our intention, once the program ended last February, to assess its effectiveness and to see whether it had value for our customers. Clearly it did, and so we are pleased to offer it again and to continue our partnership with Sobeys."
Consumers lowered their price on more than 20 million litres of fuel in 2008.
Cindy Stevens, vice president of marketing, Sobeys Atlantic, said customer feedback on the program was extremely positive. "We are pleased to respond to such popular demand by bringing back this unique opportunity for customers to lower their gas prices simply by purchasing their groceries at Sobeys," she added.
