Irving Oil Refining Donates SMART Boards to Champlain Heights School (CHS)
Company commits to purchasing a SMART Board for every classroom in CHS by 2011

SAINT JOHN, NB – Irving Oil Refining is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its partnership with Champlain Heights School by donating three SMART Boards to the school. The gift brings the total number of SMART Boards purchased by Irving Oil Refining and donated to Champlain Heights School to ten, a contribution valued at $40,000.

In addition, Irving Oil Refining is committing to purchasing a SMART Board for every classroom at Champlain Heights School by 2011.

CHEER (Champlain Heights Educational Enhancement Relationship), a partnership between Irving Oil Refining and Champlain Heights School, provides students with tutoring programs, a book club, class trips, and an opportunity to participate in an on-site refinery education program.

CHEER also provides the school with more than 200 volunteer hours per year by refinery employees.

“These SMART Boards are an investment in the future of our students, and we’re thrilled to be able to enhance our curriculum with this innovative technology,” said Champlain Heights School Principal, Bob Bonner. “From the SMART Boards to the one-on-one tutoring our students receive, the CHEER partnership has had a tremendous impact on both our teachers and our students.”

“We’ve seen the benefits that SMART Boards bring to the classroom experience, and we’re excited at the prospect of having one in each classroom by 2011,” said Mark Sherman, General Manager of Irving Oil Refining. “It brings us one step closer in building a better future for all of us who live and work here, and particularly for those who will one day be the leaders in our community.”

The SMART Board interactive whiteboard connects to a computer and a projector. With the touch of a finger, students can interact with computer materials and their finger becomes the mouse. They can write with digital ink over anything and save notes to a single file for easy distribution.

Irving Oil has supported many of Champlain Heights School’s fundraisers and events, including providing new playground equipment. The partnership supports the New Brunswick Department of Education’s When Kids Come First Plan, a plan designed to ensure New Brunswick’s education system fosters innovative, critical thinkers. One major goal of this plan is to engage communities and partners in improving schools.
