Irving Oil Donates $40,000 To Fuel The Care At CHaD
Sixth year for the program that provides fuel assistance when a family member is ill
MANCHESTER, NH – With a backdrop of family, friends and staff members of the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Irving Oil was pleased to announce a $40,000 donation for the 2009 Fuel the Care Program.
The announcement, made Wednesday at the Manchester annex of CHaD, was happily interrupted by Donna Vega, a single mother attending to the care of her 17-year old son Angel, who has severe Crohn’s Disease. Vega, who has used the Fuel the Care program to make the trips to the hospital for Angel’s treatment, spontaneously and tearfully hugged the members of the CHaD staff in appreciation of the care they provide her son.
Irving partnered with CHaD in 2003, and Fuel the Care has since benefited thousands of families throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Fuel the Care provides fuel assistance to families who are making the trip between home and hospital while a child in the family is receiving medical care.
Dr. Steven Paris, MD, Medical Director at CHaD Manchester, said during the announcement, Fuel the Care allows families to be together during this stressful time. “Taking care of children is taking care of the whole family,” said Paris. “So the Irving program is really a program from Heaven. It allows us to treat our patient’s appropriately.”
Dr. Pamela M. Hofley, MD, is CHaD’s Southern Region Medical Director. Hofley said CHaD serves two rural states – New Hampshire and Vermont – and at times families have to ask the question “how can I afford to get to the doctor.” Fuel the Care, she said, helps answer that question. The program is vital, Hofley also said, because the “most frequent patients we have are babies in neo-natal care or haematology.”
David McWilliams, CHaD’s Corporate Fundraising Specialist, held an impromptu interview with Donna Vega and her son Angel. Angel proved to be a youthful Woody Allen, letting the one-liners fly throughout the talk. When his mother said he was home-schooled for a while, Angel interrupted to say, “I actually had a lot of fun being at home.” When Donna Vega said she was proud to have him as a son, Angel said to much laughter, “I’m one of the nicest people I know.”
Irving Oil spokesperson Lars Trodson said the company “has been honored to be associated with the staff at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock these past six years. The hard work is done here. When we hear the kinds of stories like the one Donna Vega told us today, we’re very moved to be a part of their lives.”
